My behavioural design resources

My behavioural design resources

One of the things I think is missing from the human-centred design practice is the fact that many products and service aim to change behavior and thus how to do that is often skipped or left to chance. And obviously I was not the first to think about this, and therfore behavior change design or behavioral design was born. Even it's a discipline by itself, I think all designers can benefit from enriching their knowledge and skill base with behavior design resources. And so, without further ado, here is my list (I'll keep updating it as I discover new things):

Books I've read

Note: The books have links to Amazon ES, as I am in Spain at the date of publishing this article.

1. Tiny habits by BJ. Fogg - a pioneer in behavior design and persuasive design from Standford, BJ Foggis a master of showing you how to use his model to change behavior. Basically, you need 3 ingredients: motivation, ability and trigger. Check out my short article about it here.

2. Engaged: Designing for Behavior Change by Amy Bucher - learn how to use the COM-B model to design for behaviour change

3. Start at the end. How to build products that create change  by Matt Wallaert - Matt describes his model called the Intervention Design Process (IDP) - a very interesting and easy to follow perspective, I loved the chapter on how to design for ethical behaviour change.

4. Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products by Nir Eyal - wrote an article a while back here

5. Nudge by Richard H. Thaler & Cass R. Sunstein - a classic

6. The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do, and How to Change by Charles Duhigg

7. Designing for Behavior Change: Applying Psychology and Behavioral Economics by Stephen Wendel

8. How To Get People to Do Stuff: Master the art and science of persuasion and motivation  by Susan M. Weinschenk

9.  100 Things Every Designer Needs to Know About People by Susan M. Weinschenk

10.  Design for the Mind: Seven Psychological Principles of Persuasive Design by Victor S. Yocco

11.  The power of moments by Chip Heath & Dan Heath

12. Switch: How to change things when change is hard by Chip & Dan Heath

13. The willpower instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It by  Kelly McGonigal
